3. Production of split acacia stakes
Unlike the round post, split acacia posts can be produced from almost any diameter log, as a larger post can be split to produce a thinner one.
The dimensions of split acacia posts that can be produced are more restricted than for sawn posts. There are two reasons for this: (1) we are dependent on the maximum opening of the splitter - 2.2m long. It is therefore not possible to produce split acacia posts longer than 2.2m. (2) The splitter follows the grain of the wood, i.e. the direction of the fibres, which means that the split post is less straight than the sawn post. When splitting small diameters, the slightest deviation of the grain makes the post too thin in some places, making it unusable. This is the reason why we do not produce split posts with a perimeter of less than 20cm.
Split acacia wood stakes can be debarked before being put through the splitter.
The split stakes are then pointed and straightened (correction of excessive curvature) using a bandsaw.
Split stakes can also be planed and sanded for a more aesthetic finish.
